6 Tips For Achieving the Perfect Wedding Ready Skin

It’s every woman’s dread waking up on her wedding morning with a big, pus-filled friend on her chin. Although most of the time spots during the lead up to weddings are stress-related, we all want to do the best preventative measures possible to stop those uninvited “friends” from showing up.

Here are our best spot preventing tips:

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse

Naturally, we all want to pile on the most full coverage concealer we can to cover up those pesky spots. What’s important is making sure you take your makeup off with a good quality cleanser so there is no build-up of makeup around your spots. We recommend a foaming cleanser that contains ingredients such as tea tree oil or salicylic acid, both are great anti-inflammatories.

Face wipes are a huge no from us unless they’re a quick, on-the-go, fix. Face wipes generally don’t give the skin a good cleanse, most leave a large amount of oil and makeup residue on the skin,.. exactly what you want to avoid for the prevention of spots.

Salicylic acid, and lots of it

Salicylic acid is one of acne’s biggest enemies. The acid contains properties that actively reduce sebum, the creator of spots. Salicylic acid works by breaking down skin debris that clogs pores, It’s known to be able to penetrate the skin so deeply it can disrupt the intracellular structure that holds the skin together. What this means is salicylic acid is a key ingredient for targeting spots and acne, it works particularly well on blackheads and whiteheads. A product including salicylic acid should be a definite staple in your skincare essentials for targeting spots.

The power of Retinol

Retinol is a must-have, wonder product for many different reasons. The main being it will encourage the regeneration of cells and increase collagen production, making it one of the most effective skincare products for anti-ageing. In relation to spots and acne, retinol helps slough off the dead layer of your skin, therefore helping to diminish spots. The regeneration benefit of retinol will help to speed up the lifespan of a spot. Retinol’s come in a variety of different strengths, we recommend starting on a low percentage such as 0.3%, and increasing the percentage over time. Starting on a high percentage of retinol may cause sensitivity, irritation and dryness. Retinol should only be used at night, the use of retinol can increase your sensitivity to the sun due to its ability to slough off dead skin. We recommend using an SPF minimum of 30 during the day when using retinol.

Keep hydrated!

Water is, without a doubt, the single most important component to our bodies. It makes up over two-thirds of our bodies and is essential for normal functioning of our brain, heart, circulation as well as our digestion. Drinking lots of water is also a natural detox for your body. Hydrated skin recovers quicker, pores are smaller and we carry a natural glow.

The more hydrated we are, the more we actually sweat! Although not pleasant, sweating helps remove dirt and pollutants and also helps unclog your pores. So, the more water we consume helps to flush out toxins from the skin, in turn, flushing out our spots!
Health experts say we should drink 6-8 glasses of water per day, although an accurate measure is dependent on our age, height and weight.

Make sure you have a healthy diet

New scientific evidence shows foods containing a high GI index can lead to an increase in spots and acne. Foods with a high glycemic index include sugar, sweets, pizza and soft drinks. It is said that such foods are absorbed very quickly by our bodies, leading to a spike in blood sugars. Raised blood sugars lead to an increase in insulin production, which in turn increases sebum production and encourages the body to produce more androgen hormone. So if you’re looking for clear skin in time for your wedding, it’s, unfortunately, time to part ways with the chocolate! 🍫 😔

Don’t stress!

We’re well aware that not getting stressed during the lead up to your wedding is definitely easier said than done. However, make sure you’re taking care of number one and making time for the things you enjoy before your big day. We hear an additional hen do to a spa is also great for keeping those stress levels down, *hint hint* bridesmaids to be 😉
